Blue and Gold Macaws:
One of the larger Macaws, (34 to 36 inches) the Blue and Gold
Macaw is not only exquisitely brilliant in its coloration, it
also is considered to have one of the best personalities and the
most social behavior of the larger Macaws. Like most of our
Macaw species, they are playful, comical, intelligent, loving
and mischievous. They can love snuggling and “hanging out” with
their owners. What we especially like about the Blue and Golds
is their personality makes them a great companion bird for a
single person, but if well socialized, they can be friendly with
the whole family and outsiders as well. They love to show off
and interact with more than just their owners. Train them well,
set boundaries and expectations, again, much as you would a two
year old child. Independent play on its cage or play stand is a
must, as always, you don’t want this huge Macaw running around
the house getting into mischief or trouble that could be harmful
to it or others.
Their talking ability is that of most Macaws, but can be
encouraged to have a good vocabulary. As with the Severes, teach
them well and teach them often. No one needs a big Macaw using
its outside voice inside.
Lots of exercise for your Blue and Gold, a very large cage (for
instance 46 inches by 29 inches by 6 feet high) and a heavy duty
play stand. Provide lots of toys of course, rotated often, and
entertaining activities to challenge this highly intelligent
bird.
Feed a large variety of vegetables, fruits, beans, grains and a
seed (or pellet) mix for large parrots. And nuts, offer a few
nuts daily… walnuts, almonds, Brazil nuts, macadamia, etc. As
with our other Macaws, the earlier you begin to introduce new
foods to them, the more versatile they will be in their
exploration of foods and a variety of different foods will also
provide a source of entertainment.

Severe Macaws:
Severe Macaws, the biggest of the mini-Macaws (about 19 inches)
possess all the abilities of their bigger cousins. They are full
of playfulness, interaction, gymnastics and will soak up your
attention with cuddling and attentiveness. Train them well, much
as you would a two year old child. Enjoy them laying in your
lap, going about your daily tasks or watching TV with them on
your shoulder, but also teach them to play independently on a
play gym or the top of their cage, and they will fill your life
with endless hours of enjoyment and love. Provide a variety of
toys and rotate them often, peaking their interest and
inquisitiveness. Their talking ability is adequate, teach them
early and teach them often. The more words they can say, the
less occasion they will have to use their own voice in order to
get your attention.
A good parrot mix or parrot pellets is basic, but don’t forget
the fruits and vegetables. Our Severe Macaws love almonds, so
try some nuts as well. The earlier you begin to introduce new
foods to them, the more versatile they will be in their
exploration of foods. Don’t stop at apples, oranges, peas, corn,
carrots, they will love sweet potatoes, corn on the cob,
zucchini, grapes, the list is endless.
